I wanted to give you a quick background on what I'm looking for in guests on the show because I often talk about I want really good quality and good quality advice for you guys as practical and effective. And it gets at the reality of what dating, sex, and relationships really is like.

That means that the three places I look for insights, and I'm looking for guests, are:

#1) it's people with a depth of experience. Now, think years of practice and life experience in one specific area. That's the ideal I'm looking for there;

#2) would be extreme experiences. So, that tells us what is possible. When someone has an extreme experience or extreme lifestyle that tells us like, "Uh, there's something a bit different going on in the world that I didn't think was possible, but, you know, there are some people living like this." A good example of that would be Landon Foxx, the male stripper we had on a few episodes back. He's got a pretty extreme lifestyle and he shows you some pretty hair-raising adventures he's had, which shows you what's possible. Maybe not for everyone, but it shows you what's possible;

And the third one is what is proven scientifically. So here I'm talking about academics and peer reviewed published research. I'm talking about people who've studied this area and they've done research on it, and they've participated in research to actually prove (with controlled studies) what happens in dating, sex, and relationship scenarios, and with our sexuality.

So today, we are going back to that third one, we're going to the academic world, to find out how science is currently looking at sex and sexuality. Specifically, today we get the latest perspective from neuroscience. That's basically the brain. We're looking into the brain and its role in attraction and our sexual preferences and behaviors, so how it helps make decisions. How our brain makes its decisions around these areas.

Today's guest is Andrea Kuszewski. She's a cognitive scientist, behavior therapist, and research psychologist. She has written for Scientific American, Discover Magazine, Wired UK, and has a popular neuroscience blog called The Road Neuron on Science 2.0. Many of the articles that she's written have looked at the neuroscience of sex and sexuality, which is one our main interest. So she has a lot to say on this topic. Now some of today's interview is going to get a little technical as we get into neurotransmitters and brain structure, and other things. But it's well worth the effort to get through it as it really offers an interesting and scientifically valid framework on how we look at dating and relationships, and how we make decisions that are related to these areas.

So personally, I've walked away from this interview having learned some new ideas that will help with how I make decisions about dating and relationships. Specifically what I'm talking about here is in a specific situation where maybe you're not entirely sure about the situation. For example, there's a new girl you are with and you're not entirely sure that you’re really into that, and you want a relationship with her. With the framework we discuss today, you can look at that with a different perspective and you'd have better understanding of how your brain is making that decision and whether that's in your best interest or perhaps it's not so much in your interest, and it will help you to make those decisions.

So that's why I think this is a really cool episode and even though it's a little bit technical, and you might have to maybe even rewind a couple of times to actually get the stuff, it's definitely worth the effort to do that.
