We've been talking more recently about - how consciously making an effort to decide what kind of dating, relationships and sexual lifestyle is right for you - can make a big difference to your satisfaction and happiness. We're continuing this thread today and looking at the topic of casual sex, which is basically sex outside of relationships, whether it be one night stands, friends with benefits or fuck buddy relationships, affairs, or any other type of casual, non committed hook up.

It's only recently that some research has come out on the topic that goes against what the stereotypes have always said, and we've kind of believed. The stereotype says that people in long-term stable relationships, like marriage, are happier and healthier, and there is a fair amount of research to support that. We had assumed that this meant that casual sex did not make us happier, and healthier, and so on. It turns out though, that it's a lot more complicated than that.

For some people, casual sex does make them happier. It makes them more confident. It's actually good for their well-being.

For others, casual sex makes them less happy, less satisfied, less confident - it undermines their well-being.

So you have to figure out which one you are or how to get this in alignment so that casual sex is a good thing for you, if that's what you choose.

So today we look at how you can know which of those you are - and what you can do about it - and IF you can make a conscious choice to have more casual sex in a way that creates more well being, versus taking it away from you.

To cover this topic we have Zhana Vrangalova – a PhD in development psychology from Cornell University where she studied how different aspects of sexuality (specifically casual sex and promiscuity are linked to health and well-being. Today, she is an adjunct professor at the NYU psychology department teaching on personality and social psychology. She has a twice-weekly column about casual sex on the reputable magazine Psychology Today and has published a number of studies in the area. She is also the founder of the Casual Sex Project, which is very interesting and we'll talk a bit more about that in the interview.

As you can see both her research and other projects are all focused on the Casual Sex topic, and this shows in the interview with her deep understanding of the topic.
