Neil always had the passion for writing. He took the craft very seriously and by the time he was studying at Vassar College, he worked for Ear (an unconventional magazine), and is on the process of editing the first book he ever penned (Radiotext). Always pushing forward, he soon became a copy-editor, proofreader, reporter and critic for the Village Voice.

Midway through Strauss's career as a writer, the New York Times noticed his skill. They sent Jon Pareles to invite him into the company as a music critic for the publication's "Pop Life" column. Strauss gladly accepted the job and soon after, was able to write several successful front page stories for the magazine.

He also worked as an editor for the Rolling Stones Magazine. His cover on Kurt Cobain's suicide together with the profile he wrote about Eric Clapton on the New York Times Arts and Leisure section earned him the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award.

Neil Strauss coauthored three New York Times bestsellers - Jenna Jameson's How to Make Love Like a Porn Star, Mötley Crüe's The Dirt, and Marilyn Manson's The Long Hard Road Out of Hell - as well as Dave Navarro's Don't Try This at Home, a Los Angeles Times bestseller.

Presently, Strauss is the co-founder of the publishing company Igniter. He manages to write while simultaneously running the company.

In January 2011 Neil published a new book "Everyone Loves You When You're Dead: Journeys Into Fame and Madness" relating discussions he's had during his journalist career with a range of rock and pop stars and celebrities. Some of these discussions relate to the topic of "Game", most notably with Lady Gaga and Russell Brand.

]]> In 1999 Neil found the pick up artist community and began to invest time in studying the arts and advice they had about women.

He created an alias name "Style" as his forum discussion name, and for other's to know him by. As a second line of protection of his identity he also took on the personal name "Chris Powles" which he gave to people he knew better. No one in the pick up artist community would know his real name or about his writing career until later in 2005.

He became deeply interested in the community and its advice and thoroughly studied, including paying $500 for the first coaching bootcamp given by the pick up artist Mystery (Erik von Markovik).

He became Mystery's main wingman and companion in the arts, and also began teaching students himself on Mystery's bootcamps. He gradually rose in status within the pick up artist community as one of the better pick up artists.

Then, in 2004, another journalist researching the pick up artist appeared on one of Mystery's bootcamps and identified Style as Neil Strauss. At this point, Neil decided he should make the choice to reveal his own identity within the pick up artist community rather than have another journalist reveal it.

He authored an article about his experiences in the dating industry under his real name and published it on the New York Times.

In 2005, Style published a biographical account (with some storytelling element incorporated) on his experiences within the community of pick up artists. The book was entitled The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pick-Up Artists. Released through Regan books in the United States, it literally jumped over many existing products at the time, landing on the #1 spot on Amazon.com immediately and lasting a month as the bestseller list from October to November in the New York Times. The success of the book has been so great that it is now being made into a film by Spyglass Entertainment.

Neil Strauss says himself in the book that he is physically unattractive being short, bald and skinny. So, if he can learn to be good with women, so can any other man. This is part of the reason for the book's success.

Shortly afterwards Neil Strauss developed a DVD program on his personal dating methods and worked with a well known successful Internet Marketer (Frank Kern) to market it as the "Annihilation Method". The course was a resounding success, and made over $1,000,000 in revenue.

Shortly afterwards, Style, stopped working with Mystery and created his own dating coaching company. "Stylelife" was launched in 2006 and was the first online membership coaching training program (i.e. virtual coaching) in the dating advice industry.

Style continues to be involved in the creation of some of Stylelife's course materials and their real world seminars. Most of the coaching today is done by his own team of dating coaches.

In his autobiographical "The Game" he says that he took the numbers of celebrities Brittany Spears and Dalene Kurtis (but took it no further).

Since 2005 he has settled down into monogamous long term relationships with women. One of these was a celebrity and the others all seem to have been longer term (over 1 year) stable girlfriend relationships.

He experienced and experimented with a wide range of relationships over this time. This included many threesome experiences and having multiple girlfriends and sleeping partners. Some of these experiences, he gives honest accounts of in "The Game".

Style was placed #1 in a ranking of the top ten pick up artists in 2007. Mystery encapsulates and refers to these as Mystery Method and the Venusian Arts.

Some of these are listed below:

  • Peacocking - this is a term Mystery created which entails having at least one interesting thing about your appearance. This can be integrated in your clothes and accessories; something noticeable and uncommon, making it easy to capture a girl's attention and make her initiate a conversation with you.
  • Cat Theory - Mystery defines this term as the method of engaging with women subtly, just to hold their attention.
  • Group Theory - An approach to meet women when they are out in groups including techniques to deal with the target (girl you are interested in) and her friends and men in the group.
  • Neg - a slightly degrading (but not too offensive) compliment, with the sole purpose of snubbing a target.
  • False Disqualification - the result that "Neg" attempts to obtain, snubbing the target and subconsciously making her show you that she is worthy.
  • Qualify - the process by which a target exerts effort on proving that she is deserving of your attention. This also saves you the trouble of having to get past protective friends since she voices her interest on her own.

    • Aside from these, Mystery's specialty advice also consists of step-by-step procedural tips on maintaining emotional balance, developing the proper mind and skill set, and using these in preparation of approaching women and hooking-up with them.

    “If you are not able to attract a woman, you are, by definition, sterile.”]]> In his early life Mystery was fascinated by Magic, and notes that David Copperfield was an idol. He learned to perform magic tricks, worked at kids party's and eventually had his own agent and worked as a magician entertainer full time.

    Mystery was not always good at getting with women. He openly admits that he had difficulty in picking women up early in his life and often spent his time playing Dungeons and Dragons while honing his skills as a magician. He had sex for the first time when he was 21 years old.

    By the year 2000, Mystery, by his own account, was getting paid $1,500 per night to work as a magician at corporate events. He even made an appearance on CTV's late-night Open Mike talk show with Mike Bullard.

    However, to make it as a magician, he knew he would have to become known in the U.S. So he moved to Los Angeles, where he spent over a year trying to land himself a television spot that would showcase his talent as a magician. However, his money ran out before he found it and he had to return to Toronto.

    He was now 29, and back in Toronto was unable to get the gigs he has usually got and as a consequence was broke. He moved in with his brother.

    Now 2001, Mystery was already putting his skills with magic to another use in a new role, as a pick up artist. The unlucky turn of events with his career in magic effectively forced him to turn to his talent as a pick up artist to make money.

    Mystery has a daughter born in mid 2008. Little is publicly known about the mother of the child, although she was seen in 2009 and 2010 in public with Mystery.

    On April 1st 2011 an email was sent out from Venusian Arts announcing that Mystery (Erik von Markovik) had met an unfortunate accident and died. Project Hollywood was a mansion (the original rat pack mansion) behind sunset boulevard in Hollywood, and was deemed the perfect place to set up a pick up artist lifestyle. It would become the headquarters from which they would run many seminars and pick up artist bootcamps. It was becoming a real business.

    In 2004 he partnered with Nick Savoy (Savoy) to found Mystery Method Corporation. Nick Savoy, a Wharton MBA, helped Mystery to build a more scalable business around his coaching and teachings. They would train and recruit many 'pick up coaches' and the company steadily spread its feelers around the world to London, Europe and Australia.

    In 2005 Project Hollywood disbanded with Mystery and Style moving out first. Mystery would later set up similar glamorous lifestyle pads with a Project Las Vegas (2006), and still later a Project Miami (2007).

    In 2006 Mystery and Nick Savoy separated due to differences in opinion on how they should teach pick up artistry. Nick Savoy remained with Mystery Method Corporation (which later was rebranded to Love Systems) and Mystery went on to create a new company Venusian Arts (with Jamese Matador and Chris Odom) in 2007. The rest of the pick up coaches remained with Nick Savoy and Mystery Method which was to become Love Systems Inc.

    At this time, Mystery was already negotiating and working on his own reality TV series "The Pick Up Artist" with VH-1. In it, Mystery and his wingmen coached eight socially inept men for eight weeks to become pick up artists and compete for the "Master Pick-Up Artist" title.

    The show debuted on VH-1 on August 6, 2007 with a relatively disappointing audience of 673,000 viewers. The show's audience improved over the season making it interesting enough for VH-1 to sign Mystery up for Season 2. Season 2 debuted on VH-1 October 12, 2008.

    Through The Pick Up Artist Mystery became a household name and widely recognized as a celebrity.

    A third season of The Pick Up Artist is not to be aired. In an interview in 2010 Mystery said he chose to work on a spin off of the series instead of doing a third season of The Pick Up Artist. Other rumors suggest that season 2 wasn't sufficiently popular for VH-1 to continue with a third season.

    Today, Mystery continues to run Venusian Arts with Lovedrop (Chris Odom) and James Matador (Stan Tayi). Venusian Arts runs coaching bootcamps for men and sells a number of homestudy dating advice products.]]> Live Video Footage There has been a lot of live video footage recorded of Mystery approaching, meeting and attracting women in bars and clubs. Some of this was originally made available in the "Magnum Opus - Mind of Mystery" DVD series (no longer available).

He next continued to develop his understanding of sales with marketing skills working in a seminars and training business for entrepreneurship and sales. He is married to Annie Lalla, and lives in Santa Monica.]]> In addition to Ross Jeffries, DeAngelo sought out other dating gurus to learn from. These included Eric Von Sydow (Hypnotica), Dave Ricker, and Steve Piccus.

On December 17, 2000, Deangelo began to develop his own insights and later presented it to the world through a seminal posting on "Cliff's List", a renowned internet newsletter in the dating community.

A year thereafter, in 2001, Deangelo singlehandedly started the company "Double Your Dating" using his pen name "David Deangelo" for the very first time. As a new company, the only product Deangelo had available at that point in time was his modified and elaborated version of the seminal post he introduced the previous year. However Adam does have good all round skill set including being able to do cold approaching with success during the day and at night without being part of a large social group. For Adam however the effort / reward ratio of building a large entourage was a much more logical and efficient use of his time.

His friends that are former or current PUA Training, Mystery Method and Love Systems instructors claim he is a lot better at conventional game than he lets on and it is reasonable to believe this since he needs to be skilled in order to approach women in the first place in order to get their contact details before he can invite them out in the first place.

The methods that Adam has taught have evolved over the years although they have always involved using pre-selection and social proof to some extent. He often advocates doing lots of short sets in a bar or club in order to build instant social proof before approaching the women you are interested in or waiting until they approach you out of curiosity.

One of the formula's he has taught in the past is:

Owen finished his collegiate education at Queens University with a bachelor's degree in Philosophy.

He often has referred to the success of his own entrepreneurial venture at an early age while he was at college, which allowed him to pay for university without support from his family and also made him relatively well off at an early age.

He has noted that his drive to become rich and successful in business was in large part to compensate for what he felt were weaker parts of himself when it came to getting a girlfriend. He became frustrated when his success didn't help him with women.

In March 2010 he announced that he had become a father of a baby son with his girlfriend Roxy of several years (see video below).]]> Owen Cook (TD)'s interest in pick up artistry began when he was dumped by a long-time girlfriend back when he was still in college. Cook was not able to cope properly with the break-up. Reaching his 'breaking point' and suffering from severe depression, he left school.

In 2002, Cook decided to be a part of the pick-up artist community. He assumed the alias of "Tyler Durden", as tribute to the novel and film Fight Club which he found inspirational and influential for his will to break out of social norms and constraints.

TD (as he was known) quickly became known for the high volume of good quality analytical posts he made on the pick up artist forum. He diligently went through all the existing archives of posts of PUA (Pick Up Artists) and got straight into the field, trialling and testing everything he was learning.

In 2003, to further pursue knowledge with-in the dating world, Cook traveled across the U.S. and Canada to seek out and learn from the better known pick up artists. For much of this trip he was accompanied by Papa (Nick Kho) as the two had become good friends and wing men. He stayed with other community members to reduce his costs and coached and helped some of them in exchange for their hospitality.

Some of his attempts to connect with senior pick up artists and learn from them didn't go well. He traveled to Los Angeles to meet Mystery, but was unable to meet him (documented in Neil Strauss' The Game). He also traveled to Montreal to meet Toecutter, however Toecutter (Steve Celeste) and TD didn't hit it off on the right note - Toecutter found him to be arrogant and cut the contact.

These were the beginnings of what would become a partnership between TD and Papa to create Real Social Dynamics, one of the earliest and today largest and most popular dating companies. Notably he on these travels he also met Jeffy (JLaix) and created a bond which would lead Jeffy to become one of the first dating coaches employed by TD later.

In early 2003 RSD (Real Social Dynamics) was born. TD was effectively the creative director, in charge of coaching programs and RSD's content or coaching proposition. Papa focused on the business side of the company and marketing.

In 2003 TD moved to Los Angeles where Mystery, Style and his friend Papa were living in Project Hollywood. Not able to afford the rent, he accept the mundane condition of having a closet as a bedroom (from Papa's room). It was from Project Hollywood that Real Social Dynamics would begin to become a real company and TD would continue to learn from Mystery and Style while he was there.

This portion of Cook's life is probably the most famous. With all the events recorded in Strauss's novel "The Game", Cook and his fellow student Nicholas Kho (Papa) found themselves under the spotlight. Strauss went into detail on the two's training and how they developed their own insights on the game, learning from him and Mystery and inventing their own concepts.

The establishment of Real Social Dynamics by Cook and Papa, and how it is geared to instruct men on socializing with women was also included in the book. In addition, Strauss openly shared his mistrust of Cook through the book. He described Cook as a power-hungry and manipulative person, showing possible traits of a sociopath.

TD's approach to "The Game" at the time was virtually entirely 'routines' based. He has hundreds of memorized routines that he would use and teach to people that they were coaching. Around 2005 he alienated some of his friends (E.g. The One) through this strong focus, and a backlash in the pick up artist community against purely routine based game. This backlash was magnified by the publishing of "The Game" by Neil Strauss which put a spotlight on some of the routines used by pick up artists.

It became difficult to coach people with many of the routines because there were now so many men going to bars and clubs in L.A. and using them that girls were hearing them over and over again from different men. When "The Game" was published, the girls would sometimes say "Hey, that's one of those routines from 'The Game'" which would be deflating for the users.

Cook released his first product "Foundations" in 2006 via DVD. The same year, he moved to Hawaii for a change of scenery. He followed his first product up with "Transformations" in 2007, in which he featured a lot of the primary coaches at RSD.

At this time he also started to move away from routines. Routines was no longer a viable way to coach people because of the backlash and public knowledge of them. So TD sought out to find a non-routine based approach, and began field testing himself and getting his coaches to field test new approaches that could be taught.

This culminated in TD working on and developing his philosophy on 'inner game'. Some of this would be revealed in his 'Transformations' DVD.

He emphasized the use of focusing on personal growth and development to create attraction. This completely opposed the advice he had originally given and which was now popularized in the mainstream media which was based on 'outer game' techniques (and primarily routines).

TD commented at the time that RSD had grown significantly because of the mainstream media spotlight on pick up artistry, and all the students wanted to learn routines. It became a challenge, because they would be telling students "No, you aren't going to learn routines from us, we have a new way", when 'The Game' had depicted RSD as a company that taught the use of routines.

Early in 2008, "The Blueprint Decoded" was launched. It was Cook's seminal work on 'inner game' wrapped up in a long weekend seminar. He invested in the rental of high end video equipment to record and publish the result as the "Blueprint Decoded" DVD set. He elaborated not solely on how 'inner game' applies to pick-up artistry in general, but included how it affects numerous aspects of one's personal life as well.

At this time Owen Cook hinted that he wanted to eventually break free of dating coaching and move into a broader self-help guru role (similar to Tony Robbins).

Cook's distinctive and focused breakdown of complex social interactions brought him fame. In August 2008, He stated that he is "wrapping up with his role as figurehead of RSD and moving into self help". However it seems this was not to become the case.

In 2009 he came back to instructing at the weekly Real Social Dynamics' bootcamps in L.A. His stay in Hawaii had made him rusty and at first it was rather embarrassing. He was approaching women in Hollywood where he was effectively a mini celebrity pick up artists, and would get followed around by people trying to see what he was doing (and seeing him get blown out by women).

He quickly got back into the swing of things, and had his skills back up to level however.

At this time he shaved his head (like many other of his instructors had formerly done - Natural Tim and Jeffy) to prove that not having hair didn't make any difference to meeting women.

TD has hinted that he has been working on a future product that will be relationship focused, from which he has used the learnings from his years in his own relationship (since 2004) as a basis.]]> He has been in a long term relationship with his girlfriend since 2004. He commented on meeting her, that he decided to get a girlfriend because it would be a better lifestyle, and went to San Diego that night to meet one. He did very well over the next six years acquiring the nickname 'The God of Gamblers' after a Hong Kong movie character, which eventually became 'Gambler'.

It appears that the money made on the stock markets was later put towards building and promoting the dating company he created "PUA Training".

Richard studied and has been influenced by many of the different schools of pick-up. These include Ross Jeffries' Speed Seduction, Mystery Method and Real Social Dynamics. Although in later years he has moved away from scripts and routines and tried to advocate a more natural spontaneous approach.

Normally he approaches very directly and escalates physically quickly while creating an intense emotional connection. Although he prefers natural styles he is knowledgable about NLP and hypnosis. He also advocates life-style improvement in order to more easily attract women.

In 2006 Gambler met Kezia Noble, who would become his lead female dating instructor in the company he would found in 2007, PUA Training.

One of PUA Training's first breakthroughs was when it, and Richard La Ruina, were featured in the Channel 4 documentary "First Cut: The Rules of Seduction" which aired on December 7th 2007 and was viewed by 2.5 million people.

]]> Vin DiCarlo was born and raised in Connecticut, USA. Although he was born in Middletown on August 29, 1978, he was raised in Portland.

DiCarlo says that as a teenager he was a geek and a virgin for most of his high school life.

Right after high school he studied at the University of Connecticut majoring in Physics.

He moved to Boston shortly afterwards, and a few later again moved to New Jersey, New York. He has been based there ever since.

In 2007 Vin DiCarlo left The Approach to start up his own company DiCarlo DiClassified.

Vin's dating advice is based on a 'natural approach'. This could be in a way related to his timing, as Natural Game became a lot more popular after around 2006. His advice has been well received and he has worked hard, putting out several new products every year since he started.

]]> Paul Janka was born and raised on the West Coast in Santa Monica, California. Prior to becoming a dating coach he has been an entrepreneur, hedge fund analyst, tutor, actor and writer. He has a physics degree from Harvard. Of all of these he probably enjoys writing the most.

He moved to Boston for his education at Harvard, and went straight into entrepreneurship after leaving school. He had some business success but eventually after 5 years the company he founded went bankrupt and he was left in a less than perfect financial situation.

At the same time, as he was in his twenties he says he was relatively successful with women compared to the average guy (sleeping with 30 women by his mid-twenties). However he remembers being frustrated many times with opportunities he missed at the time.

He moved to New York City after his first stint with his own business and worked at a hedge fund as well as a tutor going forward. He says he was amazed by the number of attractive and beautiful women in the streets of New York city when he arrived.

When he arrived in New York as a consequence he naturally began to spend more time chasing women and developed a relatively extreme player lifestyle.]]> In NYC Paul Janka spent a lot of time picking up women, and became pretty good at it. Soon, he met another player, who had similar goals and they began swapping notes, theories and learning from each others mistakes and successes.

His circle of friends were well aware of his playboy lifestyle because he constantly had new women at the parties he held or was invited to. This gained him a reputation and he was quite open about his lifestyle.

In 2005 Paul Janka wrote a personal piece for fun to share with his friends. It was named 'Getting Laid in NYC' (you can download it here) and related some of his 'playboy' learnings, with some humor added in. He sent it to some of his friends, many of which were from his Harvard or hedge fund days and working in the investment banking industry.

Although he didn't know it at the time, this was the spark that would set himself up for a lot of media exposure later on.

A couple of years later he discovered that the document had been circulated around and a lot of people had read it. Bankers would even use it when planning their dates and talking amongst themselves, asking themselves "What would Janka do?".

The document got indexed by Google at this time and a reporter from "Psychology Today" found it. Janka did a piece with them on the subject of meeting and dating women.

Shortly afterwards one of the girls he had got the number of happened to find it when she Googled his name. He says today that he honestly felt a good connection with her. But having seen the document she got enraged, thinking he wasn't serious about her and was just picking her up like all the other girls. He managed to get her out for coffee, and at this point discovered she was a producer with "Today".

Just one of life's coincidences. She suggested that they do a piece on him, and when he agreed and went ahead with it, it sparked a series of appearances on TV shows (See News & Media items for video footage at bottom of page).

The biggest of these was with Dr. Phil where he had a cam and microphone strapped on him to walk around NYC and pick up women live. He gave a pretty good performance, getting girls numbers, which sparked more interest in him.

Paul is known for his direct honesty, which comes across in these TV appearances. He tells many stories where it didn't work out with women as well as the many stories where it does. He also tells it exactly how he sees it.

In 2007, Paul Janka wrote an eBook entitled Attraction Formula. He relayed his experiences and his transformation from a "20-year old virgin to a playboy who have slept with 146 beautiful women". After the success of the product, Janka continued to pursue his career as a dating coach through his company (also named Attraction Formula, recently re-branded "Janka Method").

Thanks to the book and media appearances Paul Janka became a talk-piece on websites such as Gawker.com and continued to receive a lot of media attention in New York. In 2008 when a girl met him under the pretense of wanting to date him (but with her own journalistic agenda) she later accused him of sexual assault to Gawker. This generated a lot of attention with both negative and positive comments aimed at Janka. The girl never pressed charges.

Although many admire him and follow his advice, some are just plainly offended by his approach to women, even calling him a "sex creep". As far as criticism goes.

However, no matter what people may say, there is no denying that Paul Janka's advice has been demonstrated as effective on live TV - which is not the case for most dating coaches (see below in Evidence of Dating Skills).

Janka continues to live in New York City and has writing projects underway in addition to his dating instructing activities.

Ross was the first person to create a business around seduction products and seminars.]]> It was a course that taught men how to use NLP and hypnosis to lead women into pleasurable states. Some of the techniques that were taught were, embedded commands, quotes, weasel phrases, trance words, anchoring and deep rapport building. This method is especially famous for the use of rehearsed language patterns or stories which were meant to be memorized and told to women in order to elicit specific emotional responses such as intrigue, a feeling of connection or arousal.

Soon after releasing his course Ross started holding the first seminars teaching men how to improve their skills with women. This was a commercial model that would later become a standard in the industry.

In 1998 Ross set up alt.seduction.fast a discussion group on the old usenet platform so that his students could discuss his teachings. This was the first online discussion group were men could help each other learn seduction skills. It soon expanded into teaching a variety of seduction techniques and tactics besides Speed Seduction. It is the group where many of the earliest pick-up gurus such as Mystery and others first started discussing their techniques and tactics.

Ross continued to be a major player in the dating advice industry when he was featured in the book the Game (2005) by Neil Strauss and on an episode of Dr Phil in 2006. Since then, however, with the huge number of new methods and skills being taught his position of dominance has slowly been eroded. Part of this was due to the "Speed Seduction" approach becoming less popular, with students favoring Mystery's style of pick up artistry or other newer approaches termed "Natural Game".

In recent years Ross has refined the original Speed Seduction course focusing less on memorized stories and patterns and more on teaching students to come up with their own hypnotic and arousing language on the fly.
